Cathy Brokenshire, whose husband James was twice a Cabinet minister in the UK government prior to his untimely death from lung cancer at just 53, has reiterated her calls for a screening programme.
Speaking in an exclusive interview in the Daily Express (Saturday 5 March), Mrs Brokenshire highlighted the resumption of Targeted Lung Health Checks, introduced by NHS England in selected areas of the country with high numbers of people most at-risk of developing serious respiratory illnesses, including lung cancer.
She described how James became aware of his own illness, the treatment he underwent, and how, sadly, the lung cancer recurred.
James died in October last year and now Cathy is determined to continue his work, advocating for better early detection to improve outcomes for all.
