Win Boerckel with the award presented by Maureen Rigney
The GLCC honoured Winfield (Win) Boerckel’s retirement after many years of service to the coalition and the lung cancer community at our 2022 annual meeting in Vienna, Austria.
After Win’s wife died from cancer in 1982 and he retired from the Long Island Railroad, he became an oncology social worker and joined the US national organisation, CancerCare. There, Win ran the longest lung cancer specific support group under a single facilitator in the country from 1996 to 2021 and represented CancerCare to GLCC for more than 20 years.
GLCC thanks Win for his many contributions to the coalition and his leadership role as treasurer on the steering committee. Even in retirement, Win continues to help GLCC and its members to better understand and meet the needs of people affected by lung cancer all over the globe.
The award is richly deserved, and so say all of us.
